AN UPDATED MESSAGE TO OUR NEIGHBORS ON THE STATUS OF ABREU PLACE
Over the weekend, in my capacity as president of the Rio Vista Civic Association, Inc. (RVCA), I posted a notice on the RVCA website and also sent an email to the members of our association concerning the situation involving Abreu Place, which is the thoroughfare that extends S.E. 9th Ave. north from Rio Vista Boulevard to the bulkhead at the New River.
The information I had been provided prior to sending the email stating that litigation had been filed concerning the thoroughfare was inaccurate. No litigation has been filed.
As I mentioned in this weekend’s communication, a dispute has arisen concerning that portion of the thoroughfare on which vehicular traffic is not permitted, and which many of our neighbors have used as if it were a park.
The City of Fort Lauderdale has never designated the thoroughfare as a city park, and it remains in its original status as a thoroughfare. This means that our residents and others may utilize the area for walking between Rio Vista Boulevard and the New River bulkhead.
When a challenge was raised that the area was not a city park, the City of Fort Lauderdale removed the benches and other items so as to be able to continue to maintain the area and its appropriate status as a thoroughfare.
RVCA is committed to doing everything it can in order to have the area remain open for the use of our residents in order to have a walkway to use to reach the New River bulkhead.
RVCA’s attorney is actively working with the Fort Lauderdale City Attorney in order to continue the preservation of this valuable benefit for the members of our community.
For those in our community that wish to walk their dogs along the thoroughfare, please understand that the City of Fort Lauderdale has a leash law which requires all dogs to be on a leash except when in a designated dog park. This area is not a designated dog park. In order to respect those who live in the area, and to comply with the law, it is important that all dogs be leashed whenever they are being walked, and they are not permitted to run free anywhere within the City of Fort Lauderdale except in a designated dog park.
This appropriate use of the thoroughfare is necessary in order to properly comply with usage requirements for the thoroughfare.
The officers and board members of the RVCA and the RVCA attorney will be working closely with the City of Fort Lauderdale in order to resolve the situation as efficiently and expeditiously
as possible.
