The Protect Rio Vista program utilizes your subscription funds to hire off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officers to patrol in the neighborhood.  The officers are in uniform when on duty and have full authority to take official action action should a crime take place while on patrol.  The officers patrol in a marked car leased by the civic association and will be dispatched by FLPD for any 911 call recieved from the neighborhood.  Members also recieve a cell phone number by which they may contact the patrol officers directly while they are on duty.  Members also recieve the opportunity to request a vacation check of their home when they are out of town.

POLICE WORK IN RIO VISTA AND LOOKING AT THE RECORDS

POLICE WORK IN RIO VISTA AND LOOKING AT THE RECORDS

SUBMITTED BY CHRISTINA CURRIE, ESQ.

15 MONTHS & 52 ARRESTS!! THANK YOU FLPD & PROTECT RIO VISTA!!

Recently I have witnessed and heard of some Rio Vista residents questioning the seriousness of the work the Protect Rio Vista Patrol/Fort Lauderdale Police officers are doing in our neighborhood. In an attempt to quantify the work FLPD does for our neighborhood I performed a public records request where I requested “a list of individuals who were arrested in Rio Vista in or arrested outside of our neighborhood from 8/24/2017 to 12/5/2018 where the arrest was stemming from "alleged criminal acts" that took place in Rio Vista”.

The result was 52 arrests in the past 15 months (as of 12/5/18). Here is a summary of the arrests, recognizing arrestees are innocent until proven guilty:

  • 11 arrests were for Driving Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol and 1 of those was a 2nd offense
  • 7 arrests were for Burglary Related Charges
  • 5 arrests were for Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle or for Grand Theft $300 - $5,000
  • 12 of the 52 arrests were of a person 17 or under, the youngest being 13.
  • The month with the highest number of arrests was January 2018 with 7 arrests.
  • 2 arrests were for Domestic Violence Related charges
  • 15 of the 52 arrestees were Female

Alexan / Edgewater House Condominium v. City of Fort Lauderdale

The city attorney sent the following to the commission on October 1, 2019.

Mayor, Vice-Mayor, and Commissioners:

I am pleased to report that the U.S. District Court has granted the City’s Motion for Summary Judgment (converted from our motion to dismiss) and entered Final Judgment in the City’s favor in the above-referenced matter. I have attached the Court’s Order and Final Judgment for your review. If you recall, in addition to the various state court proceedings instituted by Edgewater, it also filed suit in federal court alleging that the City’s decision to deny its development application violated Edgewater’s Equal Protection rights. The Court agreed with our position and held that Edgewater’s Equal Protection claim is collaterally estopped and therefore barred as a matter of law. In other words, Edgewater cannot relitigate the same “issues” that were previously litigated and decided on the merits by the Circuit Court in its denial of Edgewater’s Petition for Writ of Certiorari.

Based upon the foregoing final judgment, the remaining actions are now Edgewater’s Petition for Writ of Certiorari pending in Fourth District Court of Appeal (second-tier review), and its Declaratory Judgment action and (second) Petition for Writ of Mandamus pending in the Circuit Court (regarding the City’s refusal to amend its resolution denying the development application).

If you should have any questions, please contact me.

Advance Fort Lauderdale Open House

The City is hosting a public open house at 6 pm, Tuesday, September 10th at City Hall in the City Commission Chambers on the Advance Fort Lauderdale Comprehensive Plan Update. A poster session will follow a short presentation by city staff.

The Comprehensive Plan is the guiding document for the city’s existing and future development, covering a wide range of topics, from encouraging sustainable development, livability, providing affordable housing, addressing climate change and sea level rise adaptation, transportation options, park and open space, to encouraging new opportunities for businesses to thrive.

Throughout the project, the City has encouraged stakeholders to provide input and provide feedback. In addition to attending the public open house, neighbors can review the draft plan elements (or chapters) and join the public discussion.

Please visit the project website at: www.advancefortlauderdale.com.

Crime Stats

There has been some concern that Rio Vista is experiencing a Crime Wave.  The following data from the FLPD crime reports would refute that assertion.  You can see these and other reports at https://www.flpd.org/community/crime-statistics.
