The Protect Rio Vista program utilizes your subscription funds to hire off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officers to patrol in the neighborhood.  The officers are in uniform when on duty and have full authority to take official action action should a crime take place while on patrol.  The officers patrol in a marked car leased by the civic association and will be dispatched by FLPD for any 911 call recieved from the neighborhood.  Members also recieve a cell phone number by which they may contact the patrol officers directly while they are on duty.  Members also recieve the opportunity to request a vacation check of their home when they are out of town.

0810    Began and completed the out of town checks, all appear to be secure.

0830    Meet up with U30 at member residence in reference to a stolen car. Stated he left the fob in the center console overnight and the 2016 Yukon was unlocked. The car has been recovered in Miami as it was about to be stripped, an arrest was supposedly made.

0920    Patrolled Rio mainland and parks.

1000    Patrolled isles, bridges, and LYC, pretty quiet day.

1030    Patrol of business district.

1045    Final rounds.

1500    10-8, message from advising her car was broken into overnight. I called her back and she requested I met her at her work at Jack and Jill at 1315 W. Broward in 30 min.

1540    Met reporter at nursery. There were no signs of forced entry and an empty sunglass case was taken. I processed the car and submitted possible latent prints. The burglary occurred between 9 pm-9 am last night. Case #34-1512-191077

1830    Checked in with officer who was working a detail for Telemundo filming in the 600 block SE 12 Terrace.

0730    Began and completed the out of town checks, all appear to be secure.

0830    Patrolled Isles, bridges, and LYC. No unusual activity to report.

0900    Foot patrol of VSY park which had many residents at.

0930    Patrolled Rio mainland and business district.

I responded to the location to meet with reporter. It turns out that he had a tower garden (an upright structure used for growing herbs) partially disassembled next to the trash cans in his driveway. Sometime this morning, someone took it and left a note “Thanks for the tower garden trash J” on his front door in feminine handwriting. He thought that this was a snide remark made by the thief. I completed the report anyway and asked RVCA to send out an email blast to return the garden.

1645    I began my patrols and checks of the vacation homes after adding the litany of new checks to the check list.

1730    I received a call from the complaint of a vehicle partially blocking their driveway access. Upon my arrival the suspected vehicle had already left the area. It was apparently a subject with children attending the ever growing soccer camps at Virginia Young Park.

1815    Dispatch to a call of a ladder thrown of a fence by the occupants of a dark colored truck. The given address does not exist but I checked the area and could locate nothing to support the call. Anonymous called with no callback number given to the dispatcher.

2015    I located a severely intoxicate W/M subject walking along SE 9 Ave near SE 6 Ct. The subject was staggering about without concern for vehicles passing in the area. He advised he was staying nearby and I was able to confirm this with the homeowners who were present. This subject was allowed to enter their home and was taken out of the streets, no further actions taken.

2100    Checked the business, entrances streets, church and school.

2115    Report of a juvenile subject that was shot with a pellet gun in the 700 block of SE 9 Street. It turned out to be an attempted robbery by juveniles with several bb/peter/soft air type guns. #34-1511-184623.   It is possible there will be vandalism complaints of vehicles being shot with BB’s in the morning when people come out to see their vehicles.

            Suspects vehicle is a tan colored 2008 Chevrolet SUV. A BOLO was placed over the air and the ROC units circulated the area attempting to locate. The investigation will be continuing through the night. Subjects attempted another robbery of juveniles on 7 st. Subjects were taken into custody by joint effort by Rio Patrol and ROC teams. Charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault.

2125    Received a text message of yet another vacation home request for the holidays. I added this information to the daily checklist.

0810    Began and completed out of town checks, all appear to be secure. I moved several papers to the rear.

0915    Isles and Cordova still under water.

0930    Patrolled business district along Federal. No unusual activity to report.

1000    Patrolled parks which had many Rio residents taking advantage of the nice weather.

1030    Water subsiding on Cordova, patrolled LYC and Hemingway Landing.

1045    Final rounds, quiet day.

Monday, October 26, 2015      


0715    Began and completed out of town checks. Cordova is virtually shut down with the boats are actually higher than the roadway.

0800    Patrolled Rio Vista mainland and parks. No unusual activity to report.

0820    Traffic enforcement along SE 9Ave. Two verbal warnings provided to Rio members in reference to stop sign violation.

0915    Completed out of town checks, all secure.

1700    I spoke to Officer Calvey who was working a gas leak on 11 Ct. The call was handled by Fire.

1730    Met with resident of auto theft from last Friday at his house. Windows were all open on the vehicle again, but thankfully, no keys inside this time.

1830    Tides are here!

2000    10-8, conducting unmarked patrols

2200    Stopped vehicle that pulled in front of construction site on 12 Terrace and opened trunk. Female driver had car overheating coming back from around the detour. All ok.

0620    I began my patrols and checks of the vacation homes

0730    I checked the above listed house as requested during the overnight text message

0745    I responded to a complaint of fishermen on the SE 9 Ave Bridge. No fishermen were present.

0800    I responded to a new complaint of fishermen on the SE 10 Street Bridge. Upon arrival I checked the licenses of those present. Those with a valid license were allowed to stay those who did not possess a license were told to leave.

0815    I assisted patrol units on an abandon vehicle complaint in the 1100 block of SE 11 Street.

0900    All of the vacation homes checked secure.

0930    Monitored the parking lots of the church and school

1000    Checked the Yacht Club

1030    Checked all of the parks

Monday, November 09, 2015                

0830    Received a call from member who requested Rio Patrol to his residence in reference to an unknown W/M engaging in conversation on his property. The W/M stated to that he has a warrant. Upon my immediate arrival, I made contact with resident and the unknown W/M, later to be identified who stated he is in the area looking for work and was going to knock on the door seeking a job. Subject stated he possibly has a warrant out of GA for narcotics. A teletype check revealed no active warrant. Subject stated he is heading to Oakland Park for a shelter and left upon my request north on Fed.

0910    Began and completed the out of town checks. All appear to be secure.

0950    Received a call from member) in reference to her unlocked car being rummaged through last night. Stated she did not suffer any loss and wanted to file a report.

1000    Patrolled Isles, bridges, and LYC. No unusual activity to report.

1030    Patrol of Rio mainland, parks, and business district.

1040    Spoke to Officer McDowell who was taking the report. Also yesterday FLPD had arrested W/M juveniles reference to burglary vehicle at 600 block of N. Rio. Probably all related.

0555    Removed several un-permitted fisherman from bridges.

0720    Final rounds, off to a week of CIT training.

1915    Call from resident of suspicious car circling the area. I contacted the vehicle at SE 9 St/ 9 Ave. Dark tinted windows and slowly circling. I initiated a traffic stop. Driver was Domino’s pizza driver lost looking for an address. I called the reporter back and advised. Also went to the Dominos to suggest giving him a sign for his car.

1940    Removed 2 illegally parked cars on Cordova blocking traffic

2030    Rio Vista is flooded, the high tides are sinking the roads rapidly.

0655    I began and completed out of town checks, all appear to be secure.

0810    Patrolled Rio Vista mainland and parks, no unusual activity to report.

0900    Traffic enforcement along 9Ave. No violators.

0920    I was flagged down by resident who had some questions about a OJ ticket.

1730    Call form resident advising of a burglary to his vehicle.  Returned call and he stated that he would meet me when he got home.

1810    Met resident from above.  His vehicle was entered in his driveway between 1830 and 0730 last night.  Change was taken out of the center console and his $15,000 Rolex Submariner had been left under the seat.  That was missing, too.  Car unlocked.  Although he drove the car to work today, I attempted processing and lifted several latent prints.

2000    Delivered new signs and stickers

2125    Traffic stop SE 9 St and Federal Hwy for red light. It was a resident and a warning given.

2200    Flagged down reference nude bicyclist on US 1 and 11 St.  Found male and female riding in the nude condition.  As they tried to flee upon seeing my car, the male wiped out.  She got away.  The male taken into custody and issued NTA for public indecency, he claimed he lost a bet.

Monday, August 17, 2015                  

0730    Began and completed out of town checks, all appear to be secure. Upon checking vacation home,  the garage door was open displaying a nice vehicle, I checked the residence and there was nobody home, upon checking the garage interior I located the keys sitting on the work bench. Upon exiting the homeowner rode up on his bike to state he has returned and didn’t call it in.

0930    Patrol of Rio Vista bridges, isles, and LYC. No unusual activity to report.

0950    Patrol of Rio Vista mainland and parks.

1915    10-8, call from resident.  Her vehicle was broken into over the weekend.  I responded and took the report.  The vehicle was left unlocked while they were away over the weekend.  Money ($7) taken from the center console.  A package of wheel locks was moved, and I recovered several good latent prints.

2100    Returned call to resident who had her vehicle stolen overnight.  The report was already taken by patrol units earlier.  She has requested extra patrol.

2215    Observed vehicle speeding off of 11 Isle following another speeding vehicle.  Believing that I had the stolen vehicle culprits, I immediately grew very excited as I attempted to catch up to them throughout the neighborhood headed to US-1 where I was able to catch up.  It turned out to just be a teenager trying to get home before curfew.  A warning was given.
