The Protect Rio Vista program utilizes your subscription funds to hire off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officers to patrol in the neighborhood.  The officers are in uniform when on duty and have full authority to take official action action should a crime take place while on patrol.  The officers patrol in a marked car leased by the civic association and will be dispatched by FLPD for any 911 call recieved from the neighborhood.  Members also recieve a cell phone number by which they may contact the patrol officers directly while they are on duty.  Members also recieve the opportunity to request a vacation check of their home when they are out of town.

2030- continued to patrol the Rio community. Business as usual. Lots of runners on the roadway

2130- checked LYC. All Secured

2230- Continued to patrol the corridors. All quiet

2330-  continued to patrolling LYC and it’s surrounding neighborhood. All clear

0030- Chexked the Fed corridors. All quiet

0130- Continued patrolling Rio corridors. All quiet. No cars driving around.

Tuesday, May 08, 2018.

0530-  Picked up keys and phone at station. Called detail into Carol. No new voicemails, texts, or emails. I reviewed the activity log.

0600-  Patrol of business district along S Fed., no unusual activity to report.

0630-  Patrol of Rio mainland.

0700-  Began and completed the out of town checks, all appear to be secure.

0740-  School bus stop patrol, park check.

0820-  Patrol of isles, bridges, and LYC.

0850-  Patrol of Rio mainland.

1815: Attempted to enter loaner rio car but, keys were apparently in Scelfo office; returned to station to get.

1840: In service. Called detail into Hudson line and reviewed activity log. Two missed calls - telemarketer and left voicemail for other.

1900: Completed vacation check - Began roving patrol. I like this half cage with non-beeping cruise and alley lights.

2000: Roving patrol of aisles, mainland, parks, LYC, and fed hwy w cruise/alley lights on.

2115: Out of service.

0530-  10-8, I left a message with Carol. There are no new voicemails, texts, or emails. I reviewed the activity log

0600-  Patrol of isles bridges and LYC.

0640-  Patrol of the 11Ct alley. No unusual activity to report.

0720-  Began and completed the out of town checks, all appear to be secure.

0820-  Patrol of business district along S Fed.

0850-  Patrol of Rio mainland and parks.

0915-  Final rounds.

1600 10-8, message from resident regarding white Ford that parked in front of her house overnight and driver ubered away.  Vehicle is now g o a. No violations. Advised we would keep a lookout.

  1. 1715. Spoke with Ofc Ho who advised we had a s / 21 Auto earlier today. It was at South East 6th Street. The culprits were driving a black four-door Infiniti.

1800 traffic stop for one-way violation on Southeast 9th Avenue. Warning given

2000 Continued patrols.  Checked yacht club.

Thursday May 10th, 2018

0730:In service, I left a message with Carol. There are no new voicemails, texts, or emails. I reviewed the activity log. Addressed missed text about a vehicle (White Ford Fusion,) parked in front of residence. Vehicle GOA, not stolen, and registered out of Wilton Manors - replied to text with findings. Began out of town checks.

0945: Back in Rio, resuming vacation checks.

1015: Checks complete. Began roving patrol.

1130: Resident flagged me down to advise she found a $50 bill in the front of her residence. In the slim chance that a person calls Rio to advise they lost it, she’s willing to return it.

1245: Email received for vacation check; added to log.

1330: Out of service.

1500-    in service, called in, in search of the HOA vehicle, I will start my search on the mainland.

1700-    completed a loop of the mainland, spoke with (Sgt. Bohm) at the church, he stated the headmaster asked if we can move the car.

1900-    completed loop of Isles, out of service

0700-    in service, no new messages, emails or texts, called detail into Carol, starting rounds and checks

0902-    completed a loop of the mainland with checks

1100-    completed loop of LYC and Isles, still going

1300-    out of service


1600-  In service, I called the detail into Carol.  I reviewed the activity log. Two new emails left on the phone..  

1630-  Patrolled the isles, bridges and yacht club.

1700-  Conducted vacation checks.  Both residences were found secure.

1730-  Patrolled the mainland and parks.

1800-  Patrolled the businesses along S. Federal Hwy.

1830-  Moved the Rio loaner car to in front of Virginia Young Park.  I returned the loaner car keys to Captain Scelfo’s office.

1900-  Out of service.

2010-    Patrols began.  Lots of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, no violations observed

2030-    Checked in with several fishermen at the end of SE 10th St Isle.  All were instructed to park properly to avoid parking violations, and all complied and were appreciative of the information.  In addition, all were reminded to leave the area clean upon their departure.

2130-    Continued patrols of neighborhood and isles, along with LYC.  All clear

2200-    Observed a juvenile male on a bike riding back and forth along S Federal Highway between the tunnel and SE 9th St.  A resident expressed concern about the male cutting through the neighborhood. I explained to the resident that I had monitored the male and I observed no violations.  The male left the area.

2235-    I responded to an alarm call due to a living room/kitchen window activation.  Property was found to be secure, and contact was made with a neighbor who had a key to the alarm property.  He disarmed the alarm and no suspicious activity or evidence of a burglary was found.

2310-    While continuing patrols, I observed a vehcle fail to stop at the stop sign located at SE 12th St and SE 9th Ave.  A traffic stop was conducted and it was determined that the occupants were employees leaving work. Driver was reminded to obey all traffic laws and allowed to leave.  

0000-  Continued patrols of the neighborhood and no violations were observed.  Very quiet now throughout the association.

0100-    All checks of Isles and mainland streets were void of any violations, and businesses along S Federal Hwy were clear.

0215-    Final patrols of association were made, with no violations observed.  Little to no vehicular traffic observed, and no pedestrian traffic.

0245-    Keys and Rio phone were returned to FLPD, out of service.

Saturday, 12 May 2018 

0700-    Picked up keys from office, called in detail, no new emails, messages or texts, reviewed log, starting patrol and vacation checks

0900-    still on patrol

0925-    Drove a couple to the port for a cruise. They are from Utah and decided to walk with suitcases from the Floridian to the Carnival cruise located at the end of 10th Street. Oh how I laughed. I then gave them a ride rather than watch them walk to the port.

1100-    Completed loop and checks on mainland

1300-    completed checks, out of service

1400 - In service called in detail; no new messages, emails or texts. Started patrolling the area.

1430 - Patrolled the Isles and bridges; no suspicious activity or persons observed.

1530 - Patrolled mainland; light foot and bike traffic due to light rain. Checked the park.

1600 - Observed 2 subjects on bikes cut through the community, followed until they continued out of the area.

1700 - EMS responded for a medical call.

1720 - Continued patrol of mainland and Isles.

1800 - Completed checks, returned vehicle keys and phone to Capt. Scelfo’s office. 10-7.

Sunday May 13, 2018 

0700-    in service, called in detail, no email, messages or texts, starting vacation check and patrol

0832-    Completed loop and vacation checks on mainland

0936-    Completed loop of Hemmingway, LYC, and Isles, completed all vacation checks

1100- out of service

2030- In Service. Commenced patrolling the very wet roads of Rio. All quiet.

2130- Continued patrolling. LYC was all clear and free of traffic.

2230- Continued patrolling by weaving throughout the Rio neighborhood. All quiet and stormy.

2330- checked S. Fed. All clear

0030- Continued Patrolling Rio corridors

0130- Checked Main arteries and LYC. All clear.

0230- Last Dew rounds of main corridors. All very quiet

Monday May 14, 2018

0830 - Picked up cell phone and keys. In service called in detail and checked for messages. Began patrol and out of town checks on the mainland.

0930 - Continued out of town checks on the mainland. I also checked the businesses along Federal Hwy. All out of town checks on the mainland are secure.

1030 - Began patrol and out of town checks on the Isles.

1100 - Discovered the rear door unlocked and alarm activated. I made contact with the owner after clearing the house. The owner is out of town and made contact with the realtor who responded to the residence. A walk through was completed and nothing was missing, house was secured. Realtor stated cleaning people forgot to lock the door.

1145 - Continued patrol of the Isles and checked the Landings and LYC.

1200 - Patrolled the mainland and did park check.

1230 - Completed checks and returned cell phone and keys to Captain Scelfo’s office. 10-7.

1700 patrols, quiet and bad weather

1830 vehicle would not start. As serendipity would have it, 9520 was ready at the garage.. Swapped out vehicles and then returned back to Rio

Tuesday, May 15, 2018

0530- 10-8, I left a message with Carol. There are no new voicemails or texts. We did have several new emails that have been added/updated to out of town log. I reviewed the activity log.

0600- Began an early morning sweep of the business district along South Federal Highway, no unusual activity to report.

0630- Patrol of the 11ct alleyway, all clear.

0700- School bus stop patrol.

0800- Began and completed the out of town checks, all appear to be secure.

0840- Patrol of isles, bridges, and LYC..

0915- Patrol of Rio mainland and parks, a lot of residents out enjoying the return of the sun.

0940- Final rounds.

1000- 10-7

1815: In service. Detail called into Hudson line and reviewed activity log as its starting to rain. Three missed phone calls, one missed text, no emails. Two of the missed calls were from telemarketers and left a voicemail with third. Began roving patrol.

1845: Heavy rain coming in. Received phone call about three reckless drivers, one of which was driving in the opposite lane, eastbound on SE 15th ST from Cordova Rd. Responded to and canvassed the area; no vehicles / violations observed.

1915: Roving patrol of aisles, parks, LYC, and mainland. Minimal foot/vehicle traffic with the horrible weather.

2015: Still pouring rain w/ lightning and thunder.. Continued roving patrol w/ cruise & alley lights on.

2115: Out of service.

0530-  10-8, I left a message with Carol. There are no new voicemails, texts, or emails. I reviewed the activity log.

0600- Patrol of the business district along South Federal Highway, came across a homeless male to the rear of strip mall at 7st. The male left upon my request without incident.

0630- Patrol of the 11Ct alley. No unusual activity to report.

0700- Bus stop patrol.

0800- Began and completed the out of town checks, all appear to be secure.

0900- Patrol of isles, bridges, and LYC. All quiet.

0920- Placed several stop a thief fliers on cars at LYC that had visible items

0940- Final rounds.

1000- 10-7

Thursday May 17th, 2018

0730: In service. Two missed phone calls - left voicemail for one and the other was a telemarketer; no emails or texts. Heavy rain this morning, good thing I brought my rain jacket. Began visual driveby’s for the out of town checks.

0800: Visual checks of mainland done. Rain has let up so going to perform physical checks of aisles; weather permitting, I will re-visit mainland checks.

0915: Suspending mainland re-visit checks - rain starting up again. Only two left though!

0930: This rain is toying with me - resumed / finished last mainland re-visits. Roving patrol.

1030: Continued roving patrol of mainland, aisles, LYC, parks, and Fed Hwy.

1130: Out of service.

1500-    in service, added 1 vacation check, no messages or texts, starting patrol

1600-    raining on and off but I love it

1715-    still going, dodging walkers and runners, lol, they all came out between showers

0700-    in service, called in, no new emails, messages or texts, starting patrol

0900-    patrolling the mainland

1100-    completed check and loop of mainland

1216-    completed a check of LYC, vacation homes and the Isles

1300-    out of service

1600-  In service, I left a message with Carol.  I reviewed the activity log. One new voice message left on the phone.  There was a theft of a moped report taken this morning.  I spoke with the property manager who wanted to know if there were any surveillance cameras in the neighborhood that may have captured the crime.

1630-  I canvassed the area and noticed that there was a camera next door.  When I spoke to the owner they advised that the camera is no longer plugged in. I did not notice any other security cameras in close proximity of the crime.  I also followed up with Officer Diamond who took the initial report. I called back the reportee and told her of my findings.

1645-  I responded to a disturbance call.  The caller advised there was a client being uncooperative and aggressive.  

1730-  Patrolled the mainland and parks.

1800-  Patrolled the isles, bridges and yacht club.

1830- Final patrol of isles and mainland.

1900-    10-7

2045-    In service, detail called in to security line.  I reviewed previous logs, and there were no new messages or voicemails on the phone.

2100-    I conducted high visibility patrols along the mainland streets as well as the isles.  No suspicious activity or violations were observed.

2130-    During a patrol of SE 10th St Isle, I made contact with multiple fishermen.  Proper licensing was possessed and they were reminded to park legally and leave the area clean upon their departure.  All were very cooperative.

2150-    Continued high visibility patrols.  Patrol officers conducted a traffic stop at SE 7th St and  S Federal Highway, and I assisted as a back up.

2230-    Continued patrols, assisted patrol officer on a traffic stop at the tunnel.

2345-    Checks of the isles and mainland were negative for any suspicious activity or violations, heavy rain moving in.  Little to no vehicular traffic and no pedestrian traffic observed.

0030-    Continued patrols, no activity observed.  Check of LYC also clear.

0130-    High visibility patrols of neighborhood and isles, no violations observed.

0145-    Responded to a possible aggravated assault in progress.  Assisted patrol and returned to patrolling Rio.

0310-    Continued high visibility patrols

0330-    Final patrol of Rio neighborhood all clear

0345-    Out of service

Saturday, 19 May 2018

0700-    in service, no new emails, messages or texts, called in detail to Carol, starting patrol, its raining wonderfully

0836-    residents in the 700 block of  street advised me, daily, they see 2 20 yoa B/M’s walking eastbound on 6 street and then leave about 30 minutes later. Sometimes drinking beer around 0700 or earlier. She would like us to know due to the recent break-ins.

I will keep an eye open for these gentlemen.

    Light rain; began vacation checks.

    Pouring on the Isles; did the last two vacation check via driveway

1309    Dispatched call of a hold up alarm. Advised dispatch that it was a residence and I’ll make phone contact with homeowner. I spoke with resident who advised that she burned toast at it set of the alarm and needed to cancel.
