The Protect Rio Vista program utilizes your subscription funds to hire off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officers to patrol in the neighborhood.  The officers are in uniform when on duty and have full authority to take official action action should a crime take place while on patrol.  The officers patrol in a marked car leased by the civic association and will be dispatched by FLPD for any 911 call recieved from the neighborhood.  Members also recieve a cell phone number by which they may contact the patrol officers directly while they are on duty.  Members also recieve the opportunity to request a vacation check of their home when they are out of town.

1645 – Begin mainland patrols and vacation house checks.

1730 – Patrol Isles, Cordova, and LYC. Isles house checks.

1830 – All house checks secure.

1900 – I checked Federal Hwy business district.

1945 – Final neighborhood patrols.

Monday, November 12, 2012        


0720- Began and completed out of town house checks, all appear to be secure.

0800- Contact was made with resident who stated her friends rear passenger tire has been slashed in front of her residence. Upon AAA arrival an inspection of the tire confirmed the tire had been punctured on the side wall. She stated she has been having disturbance with her neighbor and is under the assumption the neighbor has something to do with the vandalism. #12-128483.

0850- Stopped by to talk to resident who called reference her alarm. She stated she spoke with somebody already in reference to her alarm. No further assistance requested.

0915- Patrolled Isles and LYC concentrating on 11 St. No unusual activity to report.

1025- Patrolled parks, No activity due to inclement weather.

1040- Responded to a w/m sleeping in dumpster room. Upon my arrival at private residence contact was made with homeowner who stated she doesn’t not have a dumpster room and did not call PD. A property check had negative results. 98 MI 12-128531

1715    Traffic stop on vehicle for violating one way on SE 9 Ave. Non-resident looking for a boat. Warning given.

1800    Monitored Davie and Fed for a burglary vehicle from 600 Andrews. Nothing found.

2000    Responded to fire at the Jimmy Johns. Someone smelled a funny smell. No fire. I left scene to Fire Department.

2145    Call from resident regarding a suspicious male walking down the street. Arrived in 2 minutes and checked the street. No one found. Called back the resident and advised.

2300    Continued patrols. Quiet.

2340    Call from the Starbucks of a suspicious vehicle waiting outside in their parking lot. I contacted driver who was waiting on his mechanic friend who knew the landmark of the Starbucks. All 10-4.

0630    Complete checks all appear secure.

0700    Responded with patrol to a domestic. The resident (mother) has allowed her 21 yoa son to move back in. Now he’s (son) is having an issue with the step-father. Step-father is allegedly getting a restraining order today and starting eviction.

1730    One message reference a car parked on her seawall. Vehicle was GOA. I returned her call.

1930    Observed a lady stop her car directly in front of me in the middle of both lanes of Cordova, then get out and begin talking to a lady walking down the street with her dog. Traffic began to back up. I pulled out, she got back into the car, and I asked what the trouble was. She was just “catching up” with her friend. Advised it would be better to just catch up not blocking both travel lanes at 11/ Cordova.

2130    Continued patrols. Checked area for loose dogs around 5 ct/ N. Rio

2330    Began unmarked surveillance for tire thieves.

0030    Took up surveillance point at 9 St/ N. Rio.

Wednesday, November 14, 2012  


1615    Began patrols and vacation home checks.

1820    All vacation homes checked secure

1905    Received call on detail phone from resident in reference to he had returned home to find rear door of house standing open. Upon checking the interior all was found secure. It is believed the small resident children had not secured the door earlier in the evening before the family had exited.

1920    I located a lost out of town motorist who was attempting to find the Outback Steakhouse off of SE 17 Street, assistance was given.

2015    Checked all parks

2100    Checked Yacht Club, Cordova Road and Isles

2130    Foot patrol along businesses along US1.

1515   Out of town checks completed and apparently secure.

1553   Many cars illegally parked on road. Owners contacted and condition corrected.

1558   Contractors parked against traffic direction on the span of the Bridge. Contact made and drivers warned. This was a problem in the recent past too.

1830   Corridors, LYC, parks and neighborhood secure.

Friday, November 16, 2012          


1115- Began and completed out of town checks, all appear to be secure.

1140- Patrolled Isles and LYC..

1200- Patrolled Parks, to include foot patrol of VSY which had several Rio residents enjoying lunch, I remained visible.

1240- Patrolled Rio mainland to include to the rear of businesses along Federal Hwy., no unusual activity to report.

1300- Contact was made with W/M 9 St Bridge, no fishing permit left upon my request without incident.

1330- Observed a S-13 W/M 800 Block of N Rio walking with ankle monitor. Contact was made with W/M later who stated he was just released from jail (ref. elderly abuse) and was attempting to walk to Wilton Manors but got lost. He was escorted directly to Federal Hwy. and sent on his way to the north.

1350- Final patrols all areas.

1815    Responded to accident with injuries at Davie/ Federal. Pedestrian was hit by car while crossing federal. There were serious injuries but not a fatality. After scene was controlled, turned over to patrol.

1930    Stopped blacked out golf cart with three youths in empty lot at end of SE 7 Isle for trespassing and smelled odor of freshly burnt marijuana. No narcotics found, as they stated that they threw it. They were local youths and the parents contacted who came and picked them up.

2130    Continued patrols. I checked for skateboarders on SE 12 St.

2245    Checked Yacht club parking areas.

0045    Stopped taxi cab for violation of one way on SE 9 Ave. A warning was given.

0120    Observed w/m urinating on the street at SE 6 St/Federal. Apparently, he was too intoxicated for it to register that urinating directly in front of a patrol car was not a wise idea. No warrants. He was looking for YOLO. Subject was redirected home with a friend who picked him up.

Saturday, November 17, 2012  

0815    Began patrols and vacation home checks

0910    Received call on detail phone from resident in reference to informing us that eggs were thrown at her vehicle as it was parked in her driveway overnight. No damage reported and no report requested by the caller, just wanted to inform the detail officers of the activity.

1030    Removed 2 W/M fishermen who had parked their vehicle on the SE 7 Street Bridge while fishing. They were advised to leave the area as they were also unlicensed to fish.

1045    All vacation homes were found secure

1050    Received call from resident who was concerned over an unknown older man (65-ish yrs old) attempting to provoke a fight with him then claiming to be a police officer. He will call if the man is seen in the area again.

1200    Patrolling business along US1 and entrances to Rio Vista

1330    Final patrols of the area……beautiful day!!

1645 – Respond to residence in reference to loose dogs that attacked his dog last week.

1700 – Responded to residence in reference to a 2 year old child found in a pool. The child was not breathing at the time of the call, and I arrived in approx. 60 seconds. Upon arrival, the child was breathing after CPR was administered. The child was transported to BGH via rescue and appeared to be doing well at that time. Incident turned over to road patrol units.

1745 – Begin patrols and house checks.

1900 – House checks secure, continue patrols.

1945 – Check the Federal Highway business district.

Monday, November 19, 2012        


0830- Began and completed out of town checks, all appear to be secure.

0910- Patrolled Isles, and the LYC.

0940- Traffic enforcement 9Ave/11Ct. 1 verbal given to one way violation.

1015- Foot patrols of parks, beautiful day several residents about. Bethany school is out for Thanksgiving break therefore plenty of kids out enjoying weather playing ball etc.

1050- Patrolled behind business along Federal Hwy.

1113- Responded to residence reference to found property, 1A330 arrived and took report.

1140- Observed a B/M riding a unregistered bike 9Ave. Contact made 29/54 stated he was cutting through from Cordova and heading towards Federal Hwy.

1150- Final patrols all areas.

1710    Flagged down reference a found 9mm casing. I explained it may have been used as a keychain or held for recycling.

1720    Delivered replacement sign to resident whose sign was damaged during Hurricane Sandy.

1735    Reminded two residents of the City’s leash law along N. Rio Vista.

1800    Received call for out of town check. Added to log

1825    Traffic stop at 7 St/ 9 Ave for stop sign/ speeding. Non-resident. Warning given.

2000    Checked Yacht club parking areas.

2240    Call from resident of loud neighbors at 9ave/ 9 St. Checked the area, nothing found. Called back reporter who stated music was turned down.


Tuesday, November 20, 2012


1040    Flagged down by a contractor stated an unknown person messed with the wires in the construction site. He just wanted us to know and to document it. He didn’t want a report. MI completed.

1100    conducting patrol and vacation checks

1300    completed vacation checks all appear secure.

1720    Traffic stop on vehicle for running red light at SE 9 St. Local resident. Warning given.

1740    Flagged down ref water main break on Cordova. I located water bubbling up from roadway at 8/Cordova and contacted Public Works.

2110    Responded to alarm at a residence. I arrived within one minute of dispatch. I checked the home, all appeared secure. MI completed.

2230    Continued patrols. Checked area along Federal.

Wednesday, November 21, 2012     

1215    resident called and stated he saw two dogs matching the description of the suspect t dogs in the attack last week. I responded in less than a minute and the suspect dogs were GOA. Possibly hold up in a home some where in the area.

1345    property checks complete all appear to be secure. 10-7

1615    Began patrols and re-checks of vacation homes

1815    All vacation homes checked secure on re-check.

1900    Removed homeless type W/M drinking beer at bus bench SE 7 Street/Federal Hwy.

1930    Patrolled the Yacht Club and the Isles.

2050    I found the gate at SE 9 Ave at entrance to Abreu Park remaining open and unsecured. I closed the gate and locked the swinging gate.

2130    High visibility patrols around entrances to Rio Vista

2220    The neighborhood is quiet with the exception of a few private parties

2315    Final patrols, still quiet.

0620- Quick morning patrol behind businesses along Federal. Removed sleeping W/M S-86 type from bench Fed/7st.

0650- Upon checking vacation home it appears the two east side windows are not fully secured. The screens are in place, no suspicion of any wrong doing, most likely left adjar by homeowner.

0745- House checks complete, all appear to be secure.

0800- Patrolled Isles, LYC..

0820- Patrolled Rio mainland and parks, quiet morning.

0840- Final patrol all areas.
