The Protect Rio Vista program utilizes your subscription funds to hire off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officers to patrol in the neighborhood.  The officers are in uniform when on duty and have full authority to take official action action should a crime take place while on patrol.  The officers patrol in a marked car leased by the civic association and will be dispatched by FLPD for any 911 call recieved from the neighborhood.  Members also recieve a cell phone number by which they may contact the patrol officers directly while they are on duty.  Members also recieve the opportunity to request a vacation check of their home when they are out of town.

1005- Began house checks.

1045- Upon checking vacation home, I observed three rear windows on the north side of the

Residence in the open position. Upon checking the windows all the screens are intact

With no signs of entry.

1100- Patrolled LYC., Isles and mainland.

1115- Patrolled behind businesses along Federal Hwy. All clear..

1210- Responded to domestic call where callers two young sons were physically

Fighting last night, 3/19/11 and have been verbally arguing today,3/20/11,. and thought it

may escalate.  Upon my arrival the two sons were GOA. MI 38 11-032238

1140-  Began out of town house checks, all secure.

1210-  Observed a silver Mazda backed into residence with its rear hatch open, no markings on

Vehicle, a property check revealed a dock worker in back yard. Presence was confirmed

With homeowner.

1230-  Continued patrolling Isles. Located two small dogs on 8th st who slipped under driveway

Gate. Pets returned to rightful owners.

1255-  Patrolled Rio Vista Mainland, observed an open screen door at residence. The home is

For sale and appeared to be vacant, however after speaking to neighbor he stated the

House has several tenants. I closed screen door.

1315-  Continued patrol, checked behind business along Federal Hwy.

1340-  Checked and verified several additional workers that had no business markings on their

Work vehicles, all confirmed.

1420-  Continued patrol of Rio Vista Parks, LYC, Mainland and Isles.

1530-  Not much activity, pretty quiet day

1800            Patrolled all of the isles.  Maintained a presence along Cordova.

1900            Flagged down at N. Rio Vista and SE 6 Ave regarding a homeless person in the area.  Made contact with an individual who was about to explore the dumpster on the NE corner apartment complex.  She was instructed to leave the area and complied.

2000            Conducted checks of parks and all access streets along Federal, Rio Vista and SE 9 Ave

2100            Checks along isles and Cordova

2200            Maintained a heavy presence along Federal Highway access points.  SE 7 St, Ponce

2300            Continued patrol of all areas.

0825            Began patrols and checks of current vacation homes

0930            All vacation homes checked secure

0940            Received call from resident on detail phone in reference informing the Rio Vista officers he believes that an unknown person was prowling on his property last night around 2300 hrs in the orchid house again, which has been the target of thefts on several occasions in the past. Nothing is reported missing but he stated it was clear that someone had attempted unsuccessfully to take the flower baskets once again.

1105            Assisted a lost motorist who was looking for Las Olas Blvd.

1130            Complete patrols of all of the Isles/Cordova Road and the Yacht Club.

1215            Dispatched to residence in reference to an audible alarm overheard by a neighbor.  Upon arrival I located a rear patio door that was not secured and the interior of the two story home was checked.  It appeared that the motion sensor had picked up the interior movements of the family car and all was secure.  Approximately 15 minutes AFTER I had arrived at the home and checked the entire interior of the home the alarm monitoring service finally called the police.  Don’t believe everything you see in those television advertisements.  MI Card #11-033383

1915            Began patrols and re-checks of vacation homes

2005            All vacation homes checked secure on re-checks

2055            Removed two B/M fishermen from the SE 7 Street Bridge (unlicensed)

2130            Traffic enforcement along SE 7 Street from Federal Hwy to SE 9 Ave

2200            Check of all parks, they are cleared of all patrons

2245            I stopped a silver 1997 Ford Taurus which was being operated by a B/M as it wandered aimlessly thru several streets in Rio Vista.  Subject has a lengthy criminal history (at least 10 arrests in Broward County alone) on various charges, no current warrants and his DL was valid.

He was accompanied by a young (18-22 yrs old) W/F who stated she lives in neighborhood and they were just out looking at the neighborhood   This address is beginning to have numerous visitors of a questionable background on a very frequent basis and may soon become a trouble spot for the neighborhood.  Although I couldn’t find any illegal activity tonight, these two subjects were definitely an odd match together and were doing more than just sightseeing on this night

0900            Checks complete.  Continued patrols of Isles/Cordova area.

0950            Observed 3 vehicles in e/b lanes of SE 10 St. in front of  SE 10 St.  Have warned owner and his workers before of neighbors concerns with them blocking the roadway.  Today, two large vehicles (trunk & van) were parked on top of the bridge causing a traffic hazard.  I again informed them they were not to block the roadway and that if this continues and we continue to get complaints we will have no choice but to issues citations.  They stated they understood and apologized for the situation today.

1000            Patrols of Federal Hwy/Rio/Ponce areas.

1345            Observed male sitting in parked vehicle in 1800 blk of SE 10 St.  Turned out to be a local worker taking a break.

1530            Dispatched complaint of vehicles blocking the roadway in front of 1500 SE 10 St.  Contacted vehicle owner who moved vehicles back into driveway.  MI card completed.

1730            Removed fisherman from private dock on Cordova/ SE 11 St.

2130            Traffic Stop at SE 7 ST/ Federal for speeding vehicle.  Warning given.

2200            Checked Yacht Club parking areas

2330            Investigated 3 teens on private dock along Cordova.  They claimed to have just been visiting a friend in the area and were now just hanging out.  No illegal activity noted and they were sent on their way.

1530            Message was left by resident concerning several males (18-20’s) wearing blue shirts and conducting some sort of door to door solicitations at around 1300 hrs.  Returned call to member and left a message.  Unknown area where they were last seen.

1545            Responded to S. Federal and SE 7 St regarding an accident involving injuries.

1630            Began vacation checks.

1730            House checks completed.  Made contact with fisherman trespassing on the private docks along Cordova.  Advised them they must stay to the public areas.  They complied.

1445 – Patrol Isles, Cordova and LYC. Check for illegal fishermen per a voicemail left on detail phone. No illegals found.

1600 – Vacation checks completed during patrols.

1615 – Patrol Rio, Ponce, and area parks. Special attention to traffic enforcement on 9th Avenue as well as 9th Street.

1730 – Patrol Federal Highway area.

0900- Began out of town home checks, all secure.

1015-Patrolled Isles, LYC. And Rio Vista mainland. No unusual activity to report.

1045-Storms rolled in not much going on at this point.

1100-Patrolled behind and in front of businesses along Federal Hwy.

1150-Stopped off at residence to ask about open windows to the rear.

Stated she left the windows open while on vacation in order to air out house, but realizes

It was not a good idea.

1215-Continued patrol.

1230-Verified and confirmed ID’s of several workers in the area.

1800             Patrol of Cordova, parks and areas of high traffic.

1900            Heavy rains.  Maintained visibility at neighborhood access points from Federal Highway.

2000            Still raining very heavily.

2100            Patrolled the isles and Cordova area.

2200            Circulated all the streets along Federal, checked the parks and Rio Vista Blvd

2300            Continued patrol throughout all areas.  Monitored traffic at neighborhood access points

0715            Completed all vacation checks inside of Rio.  I also checked the gazebo, LYC, and parks.

1750            Responded to alarm.  Arrived within 2 minutes while alarm was still going off.  All appeared secure.  MI Completed.

1900            Removed fishermen for illegal parking and alcohol from end of SE 10 St

1940            Stopped vehicle for improper turn at 9 st/ Federal.  Warning given.

2100            Continued patrols of area.  All secure

2130            Began unmarked patrols of neighborhood.  Checked businesses along federal

0720            Began patrols, checks of vacation homes and distribution of membership renewal stickers

0815            Checks of Bethany Christian School during drop offs and traffic in area

1035            Completed the delivery (13) new renewal stickers to members as well as (2) new yard signs and several repairs were made to signs that had suffered damage.

1055            Dispatched to residence in reference to a residential alarm, the home was found secure however several windows were left opened to allow fresh air into the home which seemed to have been responsible activated the motion sensors inside the home.  The property owner came on scene and the interior was checked again finding all secure.

1145            I spoke to the Broward County Traffic Engineering Dept. (954-847-2600) about the possibility of increased signage at SE 9 Ave and SE 12 Street.  Additional One Way, DO Not Enter, No Outlet or No Left Turn signs might help alleviate the almost epidemic amount of drivers that are now entering Rio Vista from SE 12 Street.  The supervisor that I spoke to was familiar with the areas and promised his office would take another look at the area within the next 3-4 days and he would return my call with their findings.  He agreed that the entire street is very confusing when drivers are forced to make U-turns and exit the same way the entered.

1225            A traffic stop was made on a W/M bicyclist who was riding at a high speed N/B on SE 9 Ave and disregarding three separate stop signs.  The visitor from California was riding to his brother’s shop near E. Las Olas Blvd.  Citation was issued on one stop sign only.  The driver was apologetic stating he was being “stupid”.

1310            Checked all of the parks, Isles and Cordova Road area (secure)

1400            Checked Yacht Club and final checks of area

1500 – Patrol Rio, Ponce, and area parks. Special attention to traffic concerns expressed my member during prior patrols. (9th ave, 9th st., and 12th street for speed, stop signs, and one way violations).

1538 – Traffic stop for moped on sidewalk and running stop signs. Subject was cited for Stop sign and sidewalk. He has been given warnings in the past and also seemed as if he was trying to flee from me on this incident. (OR# 11-36160)

1645 – Patrol Isles, Cordova, and LYC.

1701 – Responded to a domestic in progress. 14 yr old son was breaking up the house. He was transported to Covenant House by patrol units and I completed report # 11-36205.

0815            Began patrols and checks of vacation homes

0830            Checks of Bethany Christian School during drop offs and traffic in area

0930            Moved a blue Chevrolet Colorado P/U from SE 7 Street and Cordova Road due to traffic hazard.  The driver was making a dock repair nearby but was happy to removed the vehicle from Cordova Road.

0945            All vacation homes checked secure

1020            Checked all of the parks

1140            Stopped a W/M riding a moped in an empty lot in the 1000 block of SE 11 Ct.  The driver was a resident of Rio Vista hoping to buy the empty lot from the owner, he was checking the property for a possible purchase.

1155            Dispatched to Cliff’s Lake in reference to a refused complainant reporting a W/M with a child throwing some things into the water there.  Upon arrival (within 1 minute) I located the described subjects feed a large congregation of wild ducks popcorn and bread crumbs. No violations of law/event closed with an MI Card #11-036502

1235            Traffic enforcement of SE 9 Street at SE 12 Street-(3) citation were issued top violators of the do not enter signs but entering Rio Vista from SE 12 Street.

1340            Clear a traffic problem resulting from an abundance of construction vehicles at N. Rio Vista Blvd. at SE 5 Ct.,   Two large construction vehicles presented a traffic safety problem as they were blocking the intersection.  Both were removed and parked elsewhere.

1400            Final patrols/Checks made of all Isle

1800            Patrolled area, checked businesses along Federal

2030            Checked yacht club parking areas, all secure.

2130  Received call from resident.  He stated that his Ex-wife, made threats to come over and cause problems tonight.  Advised I would provide extra patrol and advised on restraining order.

2200            Observed suspicious pick up sitting near SE 6 ST/ N. Rio.  Stopped vehicle for taillight violation.  Driver, (non-resident) claimed to be waiting on a friend. He was arrested for DWLS six times.  Vehicle towed.   11-36715.

1130            Vacation checks done. Patrols of Isles/LYC/Cordova areas.

1220            Dispatched to alarm. Upon arrival, nobody home, house found secure and no alarm heard.  ADT contacted homeowner to advise them to come back to check their alarm. Stood by for owner but they never arrived. MI 11-36935

1645            Stopped vehicle for running stop sign at SE 9 St/ Rio Vista.  Warning given.

1730            Received call from resident at SE 7 St/ Cordova reference a subject fishing that one of the officers asked him to call us if he was ever seen again due to lengthy criminal history.  Contacted subject, who was in fact a career criminal.  He did appear to be just legitimately fishing.  No warrants.  He was sent from the area due to no fishing license and caller advised.

1930            Checked Yacht Club parking areas.  A large number of vehicles there due to some type of event.

2115            Moved several fishermen from SE 10 ST for illegal parking

2245            Call of a hit and run at Davie and Federal.  Circulated area for vehicle, unable to locate.

1430            (1) message on detail phone from a anonymous caller reporting a young well dressed black male and white male were soliciting at her home in the 900 block of Ponce De Leon today at approximately 1315.  I will observe for these subjects during my patrols today.

1445            Began patrols and checks of vacation homes.

1510            Unable to locate any solicitors in the area of Ponce De Leon, no further complaints.

1600            All vacation homes checked secure

1700            Patrols of all Isles, Cordova Road and the Yacht Club

1720            Checked two fishermen on SE 10 Street that were leaving the area, I had them clean up the area better before they left as some litter remained on the bank.

1745            Checked all of the parks and business along Federal Hwy.

1815            Made final checks of neighborhood, all still quiet
